1. Introduction and Chassis-Engine Basics

However, due to their frequent daily operation—often under heavy load and start-stop conditions—rigorous maintenance is crucial to prevent premature aging, component wear, and functional degradation. The primary and most fundamental habit is to strictly adhere to the chassis and engine maintenance schedule outlined in the vehicle manual (Habit 1). This includes changing the engine oil, replacing the filter, and inspecting the braking system regularly as specified by the chassis manufacturer. Treat this as the non-negotiable baseline upon which all other maintenance procedures are based.
2. Hydraulic Oil: Level, Grade, and Replacement Procedure
The hydraulic system is the lifeblood of the compaction mechanism, so the oil level must be checked daily. Before starting work each day, ensure all cylinders (push rods, scrapers, slide plates) are fully retracted and the filler cap is closed; the oil level must be between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick—fill if necessary (Habit 2). Choose the correct fluid grade: Use No. 46 anti-wear hydraulic oil at room temperature, but switch to No. 32 low-temperature oil in cold climates (below 0°C). Never mix different brands or grades of fluid, and always use a fine-mesh filter when adding new oil to the tank to prevent contamination (Habit 3). To maintain long-term equipment health, change the hydraulic oil and filter after the first three months of use, and then every six months thereafter. The replacement procedure includes retracting all cylinders, thoroughly draining the old oil, cleaning the coarse filter, the inside of the tank, and the drain plug, then filling to the correct mark. After filling, purge any trapped air by idling the engine and slowly operating the pump, and finally perform a test run to verify proper function, while checking for leaks in fasteners and seals (Habit 4).
3. Hoses, Seals, and Lubrication Intervals
High-pressure hydraulic hoses have a limited lifespan; as a precaution, they should be replaced every two years and regularly inspected for cracks, aging, localized damage, or bulges—if any problems are found, replace them immediately (Habit 5). In addition, regularly visually inspect connections and around cylinder rods for oil leaks; if worn seals are found, replace them immediately to avoid pressure loss and environmental pollution (Habit 6). Moving parts require continuous lubrication: apply calcium-based grease to the slide, bulldozer blade guides, and all rotating shafts once or twice a week. Use a grease gun at the designated nozzles until fresh grease is visibly expelled from the gaps—this simple step significantly reduces friction and extends component life (Habit 7).
4. Cylinder Maintenance and Hydraulic Calibration
Hydraulic cylinders require minimal intervention during normal operation—never disassemble them for routine maintenance. However, if you discover external leaks or severe internal bypassing (e.g., slow leakage under load), immediately disassemble the affected cylinder and replace the seals (Habit 8). It is also important to periodically verify the system's operating pressure. Each vehicle has a predetermined design pressure, which can be read on a pressure gauge near the multi-way valve when starting the cylinder. If the reading deviates from the specifications, adjust the safety valve on the multi-way valve assembly: loosen the lock nut, turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase the pressure, or counterclockwise to decrease the pressure, and then retighten the nut once the correct value is reached (Habit 9). Finally, do not neglect the pressure relay—its setpoint should always be 1 MPa lower than the main system operating pressure. Regularly check this setting to ensure the relay triggers correctly under overload conditions, thus protecting the pump and compaction circuit (Habit 10). Incorporating these ten habits into your daily and weekly routines will significantly improve the reliability, efficiency, and lifespan of your compacted garbage truck.
